How lessons start.
Finding the right teacher matters more than anything else in the first year. We make the introduction, so the fit is right from the first lesson.
And if the student needs a piano to practice on, we can help with that too.

More about our programs.

A stage to work toward.
Twice a year, students perform in the Frank & Camille’s gallery, surrounded by the pianos. A recital gives every student a clear goal: a piece to learn, polish, and share.
For a lot of students, it’s the moment practice turns into performing.
- Pieces chosen and prepared with your teacher
- Performed on a grand piano in the gallery
- Held twice a year, so there’s always a next goal

Get ready for NYSSMA.
NYSSMA, the New York State School Music Association, holds solo festivals across the state every spring. Students play a graded solo for a judge and get a rating and written feedback on where they stand.
Outside of All-State, these festivals are evaluations, not competitions. Students measure themselves against their own progress from year to year.
What happens on the day
- A prepared solo chosen from the NYSSMA Manual
- Major scales, with the number set by the level
- A short sight-reading passage, about eight measures
All of it is performed for one adjudicator.
Six levels
Choose a level to see its scoring format.
Levels 1–4 are rated Outstanding, Excellent, Good, and so on, scored out of 28.
Levels 5–6 receive letter grades, scored out of 100.
Where it can lead
- Intermediate All-County: generally a level 4 or 5 solo
- Area All-State: a level 6 selection
- Piano showcase: a pianist who scores a perfect 100 on a level 6 solo can apply to perform at the All-State festival
How your teacher prepares you
- Choosing the right level and solo from the Manual
- Building the required scales well ahead of time
- Regular sight-reading practice at the right level
- Starting early, months before the spring festival
Registration, repertoire approval, and scheduling go through your child’s school music teacher. Requirements can change from year to year, so check the current NYSSMA Manual with your teacher.
Teachers who prepare students for NYSSMA

It’s never too late to start.
Adults come to the piano knowing exactly what music they love. Lessons start from wherever you are, including never having played a note.
- Am I too old to learn?
- No. Our teachers work with students up to senior age, at every level.
- What do lessons look like?
- One-on-one, paced to your goals, whether that’s classical, jazz, pop, or the songs you’ve always wanted to play.
- What if my week is busy?
- Tell your teacher how much time you really have. A good practice plan fits your week, not the other way around.
- Do I need a piano at home?
- You’ll need something to practice on. Rent first, or start on a digital piano you can play with headphones.
Teach with Frank & Camille’s.
We work with independent piano teachers across Long Island. When families come to us looking for lessons, we introduce them to the teachers we trust. When your students are ready for a piano of their own, we’re here to help them find the right one.
